2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary

40 candlepower. “Big four-0.” With the 2023 model year, the Toyota 4Runner will turn 40 years old. And to commemorate, Toyota is releasing a standout 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition that is exclusively available with 4WD.

Toyota will appropriately release 4,040 of these unique editions for the American market. More than 4 million 4Runners have been sold cumulatively over the past 40 years, solidifying its reputation as the go-anywhere SUV that is equally at home on paved surfaces as it is off-road.

The legacy graphics package developed particularly for this jubilee edition is probably the biggest eye-catcher. The Toyota pickup platform, which formed the basis of the first 4Runner, established the legacy of Toyota’s historic performance in off-road racing.

The 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition will have some extremely nice, retro-inspired yellow/orange/red body artwork as a tribute to those early racers. Based on the SR5 Premium grade, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition will come in three colors: White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Barcelona Red Metallic. Bronze-colored 17-inch alloy wheels, a TOYOTA heritage grille that matches the body color, and a 40th Anniversary external tailgate logo help it stand out from the competition.

The part-time 4WD system that is offered incorporates Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and has a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range to improve off-road performance. When A-TRAC detects wheel slippage happening on uneven terrain or slick spots, it can help maintain traction by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground. A dial (placed overhead along with CRAWL settings) allows the driver to modify the vehicle using the conventional Multi-Terrain Select system by selecting a mode that corresponds to current surface conditions as trail conditions change.

Wheel slip control will then be adjusted by the system accordingly. The 4Runner TRD Sport grade, which debuted in 2022, has more of an emphasis on road-focused amenities while reducing its trail-focused features. It also adds flare and flair. The Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension is used by the 4Runner TRD Sport to improve on-road handling with an emphasis on daily comfort and road dynamics. When cornering or driving over uneven surfaces, the X-REAS technology modifies the dampening force of the absorbers. To lessen pitch and yaw by compensating for opposing inputs, a center control absorber forms a “X” with the absorbers on the vehicle’s corners.

The color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, hood scoop, and painted front and rear bumper highlights in silver set apart the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium grades. The C-pillars are adorned with “TRD Off-Road” insignia. The Limited is the only 4Runner equipped with chrome-plated exterior trim and a grille insert. LED fog lights are a standard feature on all 4Runner models, with Rigid Industries LED fog lights available on the TRD Pro.

The DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine in the 4Runner produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft of peak torque. Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (DIVVT-i) enables the engine’s torque be optimized throughout its operating range, improving responsiveness under various driving circumstances.

The tough-as-nails body-on-frame structure of the 4Runner, which includes a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, is the foundation of the vehicle’s inherent strength. The sturdy chassis serves as the basis for the 4Runner’s smooth ride. The generous 9.0 inches of ground clearance offered by 2WD 4Runners is surpassed by the 9.6 inches provided by 4WD variants. All 4Runner 2WD versions come equipped with a standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD), a traction control (TRAC) device that permits some wheel slippage to aid the vehicle in emerging from, for instance, sand or snow.

The Multi-Terrain Monitor is one of the off-road technology features found on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro. The device enables the driver to inspect the surroundings on the route and identify potential hazards that are difficult to detect from the cabin using strategically placed cameras. A high-end Multi-information Display is also included to the TRD (and Limited) variants. TRD Sport for the RoadA 2-speed transfer case and 2WD or part-time 4WD are both options for the 4Runner TRD Sport.

The 4Runner TRD Sport, based on the SR5 grade, replaces the 17-inch wheels with 20-inch machine-faced wheels with Dark Gray accents. Notably, regardless of wheel size, every 4Runner is fitted with a full-sized spare tire. With color-keyed details on the grille, rocker panels, and body sculpting, along with the recognizable TRD-style hood scoop, a front spoiler, and black roof rails, the TRD Sport gets its distinct appearance. Inside, TRD Sport swaps out the SR5 grade’s textile seat surfaces with black SofTex-trimmed power-adjustable seats.

The front headrests have gray-colored TRD embroidered logos, and the seats have distinctive gray contrast stitching. The cabin transformation is finished with stock TRD gear knob and TRD Sport floor mats.

Any Toyota truck or SUV with the TRD Pro logo is the most capable off-roader in that Toyota lineup. With color options like Solar Octane, White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Black, the 2023 4Runner TRD Pro is also a head-turner. Some of the less noticeable elements are setting the standard for off-road enhancements because they provide an inch of front lift thanks to TRD-tuned coil springs and specially tuned Fox internal bypass hidden away at each corner of the vehicle.

Piggyback-style remote reservoirs are a component of the Fox rear that help to sustain damping performance in difficult off-road situations. The adjustment offers the best of both worlds by enhancing high-speed performance and trail driving isolation without sacrificing on-road comfort or steering response.

The 4Runner TRD Pro, like previous Toyota TRD Pro vehicles, has a front skid plate made of 1/4-inch-thick aluminum with red TRD branding. Only 4Runners can use the TRD roof rack. On the TRD Pro, black TRD alloy flow-form wheels with Nitto Terra Grappler tires are standard. This trail star’s standard TRD-branded cat-back exhaust delivers the V6 engine a powerful-sounding growl.

The Limited grade’s enhanced HVAC controls, together with a standard sunroof and Premium Audio with JBL speakers and Clari-FiTM technology for enhancing digital audio formats, are also found inside the TRD Pro. For 2023, TRD Pro will be offered in Solar Octane, an exclusive exterior color, in addition to standard Black, White, and Magnetic Gray Metallic.

With the X-REAS suspension system shared with the TRD Sport, the 4Runner Limited prioritizes daily comfort and pavement handling while yet being off-road capable. Blind Spot Monitor + Rear Cross Traffic Alert is a standard feature on all grades for the 2023 model year. In addition to the LED low beams and fog lights on most grades, all models come standard with LED high beams.

A split 50:50 seat that folds flat is offered in the third row of the 4Runner SR5 and Limited models. The 40:20:40 second-row seat has a one-touch walk-in capability when fitted, making it simple to reach the third row. With the use of separate one-touch levers, the seats can be folded from the side or the back.

The center armrest-equipped second-row seats each individually recline up to 16 degrees in four increments. The leather-trimmed, heated, and vented 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, together with dual-zone automatic temperature control, make the 4Runner Limited a luxurious ride.

Parking maneuvers are facilitated and made safer by the Limited grade’s standard front and rear clearance sonar system. The Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) on the Limited gives the driver a 360-degree aerial perspective to help them observe anything surrounding the car.

In addition to 15 JBL speakers, a subwoofer, and an amplifier, the Premium Audio system in the 4Runner Limited and TRD Pro also adds Dynamic Navigation with a 3-year trial, Dynamic POI Search, Dynamic Voice Recognition, Destination Assist with a 1-year trial, Remote Connect with a 1-year trial, and Wi-Fi Connect with up to 2 GB during a 3-month trial.
