The Bundesliga club is in negotiations to sign the player, but Liverpool is standing hard on a €20 million transfer fee

Despite making an impression on head coach Arne Slot during preseason training, Sepp van den Berg is eager to depart Anfield this summer in pursuit of regular playing time. After a stellar 2023–24 loan stint with Mainz, the Dutchman’s worth skyrocketed.

The 22-year-old is still not persuaded that Anfield is where his future is, even after he won Slot’s approval this summer. Several European factions are monitoring his situation, so he has choices. The Reds will not budge from their asking price and are unwilling to negotiate.

Florian Plettenberg of X reports that TSG Hoffenheim is the newest team to enter the competition. Despite the Germans’ best efforts, the contract with the player has not advanced beyond the negotiation stage. They have not yet approached Liverpool with an offer or even begun negotiations, but that could change as the summer transfer season winds down.

Although he joined the Reds in the summer of 2019, the Dutchman has only played in four games for them so far this season. His previous club was PEC Zwolle. Sepp has thoroughly capitalized on the opportunities presented to him during his time out on loan, despite being only 22 years old. He is prepared to go to the next level of his development and the world is at his feet.

In 2023–24, he was an integral part of Mainz’s fight against relegation, and he didn’t only impress. Several clubs took notice of him because of his age and promise; he led defenders in Europe’s top five divisions in aerial duels won with 171. At only 22 years old, he has the potential to secure the starting position at center back for the next decade.A larger role at Anfield next season is by no means guaranteed for Sepp van den Berg, but the chance is there for him to seize it. Considering that Jarell Quansah accomplished precisely that last season, and if he continues to produce at his current level, he will reportedly save the club millions of dollars in the future.

But now that the player is eager to depart, the emphasis will most likely be on negotiating a deal that suits the Reds’ demands. While PSV Eindhoven is circling to make a move, VfL Wolfsburg and Mainz have already approached Liverpool with bids for him this summer. With Hofenheim’s arrival, this surprising transfer tale takes on a new dimension.
