Ancelotti sets an unprecedented record again

With Real Madrid upstream winning Almeria in the first round of La Liga, coach Carlo Ancelotti continues to affirm his position as a master of the opening matches.

Sunday night’s road encounter against recently promoted Almeria will serve as Real Madrid’s LaLiga Santander season opener.

The Carlo Ancelotti team enjoyed a successful preseason in which the players had the chance to train together for an extended length of time and there were neither significant injuries nor major player departures.

Four days after defeating Frankfurt in Helsinki to win the European Super Cup, Real Madrid began their La Liga championship defense. Carlo Ancelotti’s instructors and pupils managed to win all three points despite suffering on the field of recently promoted team Almeria due to goals from David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez.

The match against Almeria will mark Ancelotti’s 27th league start. Surprisingly, the Italian manager has only had one loss in those 27 matches while guiding his sides to 20 victories and 5 draws.

Ancelotti has had a winning record when sitting on the bench at Power Horse Stadium three times. Prior to that, Real Madrid defeated opponents 5-0 in 2013 thanks to goals from Isco, Morata, and the BBC trident. A 4-1 triumph a year later was made possible by a brace from Ronaldo and further goals from Bale and Isco. At that time, only Benzema remained in Madrid of the goal scorers.

Meeting Almeria was the 27th national championship debut of Ancelotti’s career and the record was impressive: 20 wins – including 10 in a row, 5 draws and just one defeat.

The only time Ancelotti lost at the start of the tournament was during his time at AC Milan. On 31 August 2008, at the San Siro, Bologna surprised the Rossoneri with a 2–1 win in a season where they finished third, far behind Mourinho’s Inter.

It was the only stumble in Ancelotti’s career when playing the opening match of the top 5 European championships. In all of these competitions, he won, a circle completed last season with Real Madrid.

Ancelotti three times opened La Liga with Real Madrid. The first came on August 18, 2013, when Isco scored a late header to defeat Betis after a spirited contest. They defeated Alaves 4-1 last year, and just like nine years prior, Benzema scored the opening goal.
