As nine players are ruled out, Liverpool star is expected to return for the match against Southampton

In today’s (2pm GMT) match against Southampton at St. Mary’s, Liverpool will likely welcome Harvey Elliott back into the lineup.

The offensive midfielder has missed nearly three months of action due to a broken foot he sustained while playing for England under-21. Elliott is now fully trained again, and the Reds have been patient with his recovery.

Since Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be out with a hamstring injury sustained in the 2-0 victory over Aston Villa prior to the international break, Elliott may find himself on the bench for Arne Slot’s lineup against Southampton.

Elliott will require time to regain his sharpness following his long layoff, so Slot has asked for patience. Having the 21-year-old on board, though, will be a boon for the manager of Liverpool.

Although Alexander-Arnold’s problem is not severe, he has not yet returned to training. Even if Alisson Becker (hamstring), Diogo Jota (ribs), and Federico Chiesa (muscle) have all made rapid recoveries, the match against Southampton is still too soon.

With Manchester City’s shocking 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool have a golden opportunity to extend their lead atop the Premier League with eight points. However, they will not write off Southampton just because they are now in last place in the league with four points.

The home team of Russell Martin will be without goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale (acute Achilles tendinitis) and Gavin Bazunu (finger surgery). Last week, Poland’s key defender Jan Bednarek hurt his knee while playing for his country. Striker Ross Stewart and midfielder Will Smallbone are also out with injuries.
