Barcelona ‘given green ligh’ to begin Frenkie de Jong swap deal with Man City

Barcelona are trying to land Manchester City star Bernardo Silva to replace Frenkie de Jong and they have now been given the blessing of his agent over a transfer.

The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has given Barcelona permission to sign Manchester City star Bernardo Silva this summer.

Silva’s arrival would serve as a de facto replacement for Frenkie de Jong, who has been given a 10-day deadline to leave this summer window, with both Manchester United and Chelsea interested. It comes after United manager Erik ten Hag instructed the club to be patient in negotiating a new contract with the player.

While United have agreed to an initial fee with Barcelona for a transfer that would reunite De Jong with his former Ajax manager Ten Hag, Blues officials have made contact with Barca and held talks with de Jong’s representatives and are now strong contenders to sign him from under United’s nose.

United are still thought to be in pole position to sign De Jong, but negotiations have now entered their 13th week due to complications surrounding the move. The process could be accelerated if Barcelona intensifies their pursuit of City star Silva.

Silva has scored 48 goals in 251 first-team appearances for City since joining from Monaco in 2017 and has thrived under Guardiola’s tutelage. However, he was more prominent than ever last season, with a career-high 33 Premier League starts and eight Premier League goals, as well as starting 11 of the club’s 12 Champions League matches.

Pep Guardiola admitted earlier this summer that the Portugal international may have his heart set on a move to the Camp Nou: “Today, I believe Bernardo Silva will remain. But, as I’ve always said since my time at Barcelona, I don’t want players who don’t want to play for me. I can only say that Bernardo is important to us.”

Silva is a player highly valued by Guardiola

According to a report from Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, Silva’s agent Jorge Mendes has now given Barcelona encouragement about a deal. He is said to have given his approval to the move, which could prompt them to step up their pursuit of the player.

Barca manager Xavi Hernandez believes Silva will play in the midfield role that De Jong has primarily played in during his time at the Camp Nou, despite the fact that the Portuguese ace has been used more frequently as part of a front three under Guardiola.

Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde have all joined Barcelona this summer, but none will be available for selection until La Liga informs them that their contracts are financially viable for the club. Ousmane Dembele, who signed a new contract after his previous one expired, faces the same registration problem.

That is directly related to De Jong’s future, as he is the highest paid Barcelona player and is owed €17 million in amortizations and back payments from the club in addition to his lucrative wage package. According to a Marca report, his departure is not an absolute necessity for the club, but it is contingent on the club offloading multiple other players.
