Chelsea is still actively looking for quality defensive additions as it strives for new success
Chelsea has so far added four rookies: Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Gabriel Slonina. Koulibaly, in particular, is an outstanding addition to the defense. However, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen gone, Ben Chilwell requiring time to recover from injury, and Marcos Alonso’s future uncertain, this is insufficient.
Here are three defensive additions that Chelsea are likely to make in the near future, according to Sportskeeda author Uday Partap Singh.
1. Marc Cucurella.
Cucurella recently completed a medical examination in London, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Chelsea and Brighton are currently negotiating the final terms of the transfer contract. With Ben Chilwell’s return from injury, the Blues are rushing to sign a left-back, while Barcelona is interested in Marcos Alonso.
Marc Cucurella was a consistent performer in the Brighton ranks during the 2012/13 season. He appeared in 38 games and provided two assists. As a result, he becomes the focus of both Chelsea and Manchester City’s attention.
2. Josko Gvardiol.
Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig is one of Europe’s most promising defenders right now. In the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, the Croatia international made 29 appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists. He is known for his passing and dribbling abilities, as well as his ability to read the game.
Last season, Gvardiol averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.3 dribbles, and 70.6 passes per 90 games, according to WhoScored. He is a versatile player who can play left back or central defender.
According to the Evening Standard, the German club recently rejected a Blues offer to swap Timo Werner for cash. The London club is currently negotiating a loan deal for the 20-year-old defender.
3. Denzel Dumfries.
Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan is another defender who has been contacted by Chelsea in recent weeks.
After joining from PSV, Dumfries had an impressive debut season in Serie A last season. He appeared in 33 league games for the Nerazzurri, scoring 5 goals and assisting on 4 others. In the 2021/22 season, the Dutch international also helped Inter win the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Inter defender is one of the team’s main targets this season. The Serie A club is seeking a fee of nearly £45 million to sell the Dutch player. Tuchel’s willingness to spend a fortune to bring Dumfries to Stamford Bridge remains to be seen.
When Ben Chilwell has only recently returned from injury and Marcos Alonso’s future is uncertain, coach Thomas Tuchel is looking to upgrade the left wing.
