Darwin Nunez breaks silence on ‘ugly’ red card after Crystal Palace draw

Darwin Nunez of Liverpool was sent off against Crystal Palace for a ridiculous headbutt.

Darwin Nunez of Liverpool lamented his ‘ugly attitude’ after being sent off for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen. The summer signing was ejected before the hour mark for clashing with Andersen, and he has vowed not to do so again.

Throughout the game, Nunez and Andersen had engaged in a tense battle, with the Dane looking to put the Uruguayan off his game. In the second half, Andersen confronted Nunez for angling his head into the defender’s face, prompting Nunez to launch into a full headbutt.

On his home debut, referee Paul Tierney showed the 23-year-old attacker a red card. Nunez has expressed regret for the incident.

“I am aware of the ugly attitude I had,” he tweeted in Spanish. I’m here to learn from my mistakes and ensure that they don’t happen again.

Palace led 1-0 when Nunez allowed his frustration to boil over at Anfield. Wilfried Zaha’s first-half strike was the difference between the two sides.

But Nunez’s dismissal seemed to galvanise the home crowd and Luis Diaz equalised just four minutes later. The Colombian weaved around Palace’s defence before creating enough space to fire in from 25 yards.

Zaha and Mohamed Salah both went close to winning the game for either side late on in an entertaining clash.

Nunez was criticised for ‘letting down’ his team-mates by head coach Jurgen Klopp. Defender Virgil van Dijk said that his colleagues would rally around the former Benfica man, who was signed for a fee that could rise to £85m, but warned Nunez he could not repeat the incident.

Asked by Sky Sports if Nunez had let down his colleagues, Klopp said: “Look, he knows that himself. I will talk to him. It makes no sense for me to talk about it in public, you see it.

“It’s not the reaction you want to see. Centre-halves in the Premier League do that – they want to have him, he’s a handful himself but that’s a reaction.

“There’s no time, there’s no pre-season. We don’t know how long he will be suspended. We will use it (suspension) for physical work – not as punishment – but making him even stronger and that’s what we’ll try.”

Van Dijk added: “He’s got the backing from us and he knows it should not happen again and hopefully it will be that way. He has to control himself, definitely. I think that’s a separate thing.

“He has to manage himself, he has to be knowing that these things can happen, especially in the Premier League. It will be a learning curve for him and hopefully it will never happen again.”
