Kevin De Bruyne was happy with the manner of City's 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham at the London Stadium.
The defending champions won our first league match of the 2022/23 season thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland, who made his league debut.
Just after the hour mark, De Bruyne assisted the second goal, sliding through a superb pass for the striker to coolly finish past Alphonse Areola.
Following that, the Belgian stated that he was pleased with the overall performance.
“It’s always difficult to come here, and I thought we played well in the first game.”
“We made some mistakes but I think we controlled the game. To come here, we know it is difficult so I think it was a good first game from us.”
De Bruyne has now been directly involved in 18 goals in 17 Premier League matches in 2022, with Haaland’s goal marking his eighth assist of the calendar year.
The midfielder praised the Norwegian but admitted that he is willing to provide for any of the players ahead of him.
“I’m not concerned about the Haaland connection.” I’m going to try to find whoever is going to play up front, whether it’s Erling or Julian [Alvarez].
“Obviously sometimes, it’s not 100% yet, but we’ve only played a couple of games. He will make the runs, and if I find him he will score the goals.
“He’s there to score goals and help the team, he did that today. I’m not putting too much pressure on him. I know there’s a lot of hype around him and obviously to start this way is good for him.”
Gary Lineker agrees with Michael Owen over Erling Haaland and Liverpool message
Gary Lineker and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen agree on Erling Haaland.
Manchester City’s forward made his Premier League debut against West Ham. He scored twice as City won 2-0 at the London Stadium.
After being fouled by substitute goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, Haaland scored from the penalty spot. His second came as a result of a through ball from Kevin De Bruyne, just before he was replaced by Julian Alvarez.
Former Liverpool striker Owen was quick to praise Haaland on Twitter. The former Liverpool striker went on to warn Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League to be wary of Man City’s new signing.
“This guy is an absolute goal scoring machine,” wrote Owen. “If this is the sign of things to come, every defence in the Premier League needs to be worried.”
Lineker was in agreement with Owen with his verdict on Haaland. The BBC pundit went on to provide a goal prediction for the Man City striker.
“He’s unstoppable is Erling Haaland,” wrote Lineker on Twitter. “A proper striker whose goal scoring numbers will be huge. A truly prodigious talent.”
Lineker also praised Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez earlier in the weekend. The Uruguayan scored and provided an assist as the Reds were held to a 2-2 draw with Fulham on Saturday.
“Darwin Nunez equalises for Liverpool”, wrote Lineker on Saturday. “Very clear, from that goal alone, that he’ll score bundles. The movement of a goal-scorer.”
