Colombia maintained their position in second place in CONMEBOL qualifying, behind world champions Argentina, thanks to goals from Davinson Sanchez, Luis Diaz, Jhon Duran, and Luis Sinisterra.
The team had a new appearance, donning a centennial-themed throwback white uniform with the colors of the national flag displayed in a hoop to commemorate the Colombian Football Federation.
The design was stunning, and Nestor Lorenzo’s team looked just as good as they defeated a miserable Chilean club that is still stuck in last position in the ten-team qualification group.
In the 34th minute, defender Davinson Sanchez scored the first goal by nodding in after Jhon Lucumi had headed a James Rodriguez corner towards goal.
In the 45th minute, Cordoba headed home a cross from Diaz, but the attempt was disallowed for offside against Diaz.
Seven minutes into the second half, Chile offered the Colombians a second chance when they tried to play the ball out from the back. Benjamin Kusevic gave the ball away to Rodriguez, who squared it to Liverpool’s Diaz for the goal.
The dangerous Diaz flashed a shot wide as Colombia attempted to put an end to what little resistance the Chileans offered, and Rodriguez came close with a header.
In the 82nd minute, Duran, the substitute, increased the lead to 3-0 when Sinisterra broke through due to another midfield error. The Aston Villa forward converted the break flawlessly.
In stoppage time, Sinisterra sealed the victory by scoring on his second effort. Despite the goal being initially ruled offside, a VAR review overturned the call.
With a 2-1 victory over Venezuela, Paraguay’s prospects of earning one of the six automatic qualifying slots increased thanks to two goals from substitute Antonio Sanabria.
Complete-back In the 25th minute, Jon Aramburu gave Venezuela the lead after breaking free on the right and grabbing a feed from Yeferson Soteldo that he buried in the bottom corner.
After coming on as a substitute after halftime, Sanabria, a striker for Torino, leveled the score for sixth-place Paraguay with a sliding save to meet a low cross from Junior Alonso.
Then, in the 74th minute, Sanabria scored the game’s winning goal by organizing a counterattack and entering the box to complete the move with a close-range header.
Later on Tuesday, Brazil plays Peru, and Argentina hosts Bolivia.
