Want to live in the governor’s house? The new governor of California is selling one.

In order to take on his new job, Newsom and the California first family have moved to Sacramento, which is the state capital. Their five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot home across the Golden Gate in Marin County is now for sale with a price tag of $5.995 million.

Records show that the 51-year-old former mayor of San Francisco and his wife, documentary director Jennifer Siebel Newsom, paid $2.2 million for the two-story mid-century modern home in 2011.

The house was built in 1950 on 1.37 acres of land in Kent Woodlands, 17 miles north of the city. It was planned by the famous Bay Area architect Worley K. Wong. With windows that go all the way to the roof, it has great views of the bay, Mount Tamalpais, and the skyline of San Francisco.

The couple owned the house for a while and had it remodeled twice. The most recent makeover was led by famous San Francisco architect Julie Dowling.

Now there are clean lines, lots of glass, and modern white and gray paint colors. Again, the large kitchen and six bedrooms are all white, but the look is softened by the rich oak-board flooring that runs through the whole house.

With four kids under 10 years old, it’s clear that this was a real family home. Many of the five bedrooms had bunk beds, cots, and toy giraffes.

When you go outside, the high hedgerows and raised location of the house make it feel more private. You can enjoy the pool and spa, covered gazebo, and outdoor fire pit.

And since Newsom is a strong backer of using clean energy, it makes sense that most of the roof is covered with solar panels. In order to get pictures for the listing, the new governor even left his beloved electric Tesla Roadster racing car in the garage. Do not expect it to be on the list of things that need to be installed.

Before they move to Sacramento, the Newsoms have already bought another big house in California. They bought a six-bedroom, 12,000-square-foot house in Fair Oaks for $3.7 million in December. It’s only a 25-minute drive to the State Capitol building.
