Dodgers acquire Ryan Yarbrough from Royals

Right before Tuesday’s Trade Deadline, the Dodgers acquired left-hander Ryan Yarbrough from the Royals in exchange for Minor League first baseman Devin Mann (L.A.’s No. 29 prospect) and 19-year-old shortstop Derlon Figueroa.

Yarbrough was hit in the face by a line drive and missed 55 games, but he’s been nothing but brilliant since his return. In four starts in July, the 31-year-old had a 2.19 ERA, allowing just six runs in 24 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts and two walks. He has a 4.24 ERA this season, but as a starter, he has a 3.08 ERA.

After being non-tendered by the Rays, the Royals signed Yarbrough to a one-year, $3 million contract this offseason, and he still has one year of arbitration eligibility before hitting free agency. He has extensive experience starting and relieving, as well as pitching behind an opener.

Yarbrough is a low-velocity, high-ground ball pitcher, with a fastball that averages 87 mph and a curveball that averages 71 mph. But he’s gotten outs with both, as well as his cutter. This season, he has a 4.2% walk rate and a 38.2% ground-ball rate.

Last Monday, the Dogers acquired right-handed starter Lance Lynn and right-handed reliever Joe Kelly from the White Sox.
