Does the French midfielder suit Manchester United?

Adrien Rabiot, a French midfielder for Manchester United, has a lot of issues but can help coach Erik ten Hag develop Man Utd's midfield

When asked about the plan to reinforce the force before last week’s Premier League opener against Brighton, coach Erik ten Hag replied with assurance that he was happy with Man Utd’s transfer window and stressed only signing the “perfect man” for the rest. However, the 1-2 loss at Old Trafford served as a wake-up call for Ten Hag as it exposed a major lack of midfielders. After parting ways with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic this summer on free transfers, Man Utd is yet to sign a deserving player.

As a result, after pursuing De Jong for more than two months without success, Man Utd began looking for Rabiot. When the French midfielder was on Juventus’ list of players to liquidate, the owner of Old Trafford reportedly immediately came to an agreement for a transfer fee of $ 18 million. To settle on personal terms, Man Utd must still speak with Ms. Veronique, Rabiot’s mother and agent.

The issue with Rabiot? Rabiot was promoted to the first team two years after enrolling in the PSG academy in 2010, and he swiftly established his position. In 227 games, he scored 24 goals, and PSG won five Ligue 1 championships in seven seasons. He left the team in 2019 after being removed from the plan for failing to reach an agreement on an extension of the contract. While Rabiot’s mother believes her son “went in search of freedom,” the owner of the Parc des Princes is perplexed by the motives of her son.

Bayern and Barcelona were interested in Rabiot at the time, but he selected Juventus. The Italian club is prepared to let the 27-year-old midfielder leave this summer with just one year remaining on his contract after he failed to live up to expectations there.

Rabiot’s main issues are attitude and discipline in both training and competition. He was a member of France’s World Cup roster for 2018, however he was cut after refusing to take a bench position. France took home the championship that year. Didier Deschamps, the team’s coach, invited Rabiot to return for the 2021 Euros. Before France was eliminated by Switzerland in the 1/8 round penalty shootout, he started three of the four games. The incident involving Rabiot and teammate Pogba following France’s third goal against Switzerland left the largest impression.

In response to Rabiot’s errors during the game, Pogba’s family began cheering from the stands. After the game was over, Veronique reacted by blaming Pogba for dropping the ball, which allowed Switzerland to tie the score at 3-3 late in the second half.

Which role might Rabiot fill at Manchester United? Since taking over at Old Trafford, Ten Hag has given the employment of two central midfielders behind Bruno Fernandes top priority. It includes a deep kicker who organizes play—a role that Ten Hag is keen to assign to De Jong—and a wide player who functions as a box-to-box midfielder.

While Scott McTominay frequently made forward in the Premier League opener against Brighton, Fred was employed in a deep position. Man Utd failed because the pair struggled to work together to move the ball off the home field, which allowed Brighton to push hard. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane attacked Fred and McTominay for their lack of football knowledge and decision-making skills. Regarding Sky Sports, he said: “They are not up to par. Man Utd won’t return to the top with Fred and McTominay in the lineup. Week after week, we observe this.”

Rabiot has performed in both of these capacities for Juventus, PSG, and France, but he has had trouble settling into the ideal role. He had even been used as a winger in a three-back system or pushed to the left in a four-man midfield at one point.
