Fulham have signed Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno in a deal that could rise to £8million

That transfer fee will be paid in several instalments, with the German signing a three-year contract with the option for a further 12 months.

Marco Silva’s side will pay just £3m up front for the 30-year-old, who cost the Gunners around £20m when they signed him from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2018.

Reports claim Fulham will then pay £1m based on Premier League appearances, £2m if they avoid relegation, and a further £2m if Fulham remain in the English top flight the season after.

Leno has left Arsenal for Fulham.

Leno has admitted he is ‘relieved’ to have joined a new club, having made just four Premier League appearances for Arsenal last term.

“It feels amazing to finally be here,” Leno said. “I can’t wait to join the team, to train and play with the team.

“I’m relieved that everything is done. I’m just happy to be here. It took a little bit of time but in the end we made it, and that’s the most important thing.”

The 30-year-old replaced Petr Cech, and went on to make 125 appearances during his four years at the Emirates, but only played eight games in all competitions last season.

However, Leno lost his place after Arsenal captured the signing of Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United last summer, and he has been playing second fiddle ever since.

Fulham co-owner Tony Khan said: “Bernd Leno is the goalkeeper whom we have pursued steadfastly throughout this transfer window, and we’re very excited that we’ve reached a transfer agreement and he’s now fully committed to Fulham.

“He has played at the highest level, and he’ll bring this experience and his leadership to our team. He’ll be a great addition to Marco’s squad, who are all excited for the season ahead! Come on Fulham!”

Leno is hoping to help Fulham remain in the Premier League.

Fulham had sounded out Dean Henderson, who recently joined Nottingham Forest.

The club also looked at Barcelona’s Neto, amongst other targets, but Leno was the preferred choice.

Silva’s side face a tough test against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in their opening Premier League fixture of the new season on 6 August at Craven Cottage.
