Garnacho’s ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ ‘worse than expected’, Man Utd plan to loan 21-year-old player

Manchester United have been rocked by the news that Alejandro Garnacho’s ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ in Sunday’s stalemate with Southampton was worse than first thought.

Garnacho, 18, has made a big impression since ʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ into Erik ten Hag’s first-team picture this season, earning his first senior international call-up for Argentina last week.

The talented teenager was seen struggling after receiving a heavy tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters during Man United’s drab 0-0 draw with Southampton at the weekend. And it appears that Garnacho, who was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches, will be sidelined for some time as a result of the incident.

Garnacho was sent for tests on the ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ, according to TYC Sports, and it appears that the youngster’s ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ is worse than first thought. The report does not specify a timetable, but it does state that Garnacho is now expected to miss Argentina’s upcoming international matches.

Garnacho was in line for his first senior cap after opting to represent Argentina rather than Spain. He had hoped to make Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup squad before the ᴛᴏᴜʀɴᴀᴍᴇɴᴛ began in November, but he did not make the cut.

Despite his failure to make the world champion’s squad, Garnacho has enjoyed a breakthrough season at club level. He has clocked up 29 appearances for Man United in all competitions, scoring four goals and registering five assists and established himself as a firm fans favourite.

The winger, who came on late in the second half of Sunday’s game to replace Jadon Sancho, had only been on the field for a few minutes before being scythed down by Walker-Peters. Given that United were already down to ten people following Casemiro’s dismissal, Ten Hag took no chances and withdrawn the youngster in added time after he was seen struggling to shake off the effects of the tackle.

But the Dutchman was quick to play down fears over Garnacho’s fitness in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s match when he insisted that he didn’t think the winger’s issue was “too bad”.

Garnacho used crutches to leave after the match.

Ten Hag said: “He was a little bit limping after the bad tackle. In the end they brought on another striker, a big and tall one [Paul Onuachu] and I don’t want to go for ʀɪsᴋ, we were already downsized to 10 [players].

“I didn’t want to go with players who were [just] 90 per cent. That’s why I called him off but I think it is not too bad.”

If Garnacho’s ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ prevents him from playing for an extended period of time, the youngster’s season could be over. Manchester United are still in the FA Cup and the Europa League after just under two months of the current season. Last month, the Red Devils ended a six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup final.

Man United are planning to let Facundo Pellistri leave on loan.

The winger, who joined the Red Devils for £9 million in 2020, has made six substitute appearances this season.

But he is yet to make his first start despite impressing Erik ten Hag in training.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman wants to loan him out to help him develop. Pellistri had two loan spells at Alaves and spent the entire season in La Liga last season. He returned to Old Trafford at the start of the season, making his first-team debut against Charlton in the Carabao Cup in January.

Since then, the winger has impressed both on and off the field.

Following United’s 4-1 win over Real Betis last week, Ten Hag told MUTV: “He is the example by deserving his position by performance on the training [ground].

“And I said the other day, I did not select him for Liverpool and it was not even totally justified because he was training that well.

“Now this was his ᴍᴏᴍᴇɴᴛ to come on because of a longer period he performed in training.

“What impressed me was he came on and, straight [away], showed himself.

“When they came on, Scott [McTominay] and Pelli, it was 3-1 but 4-1 is huge, to make the extra goal. In the first ᴍᴏᴍᴇɴᴛ, they did, which was brilliant.”
