Good news: Man United ‘leading the race’ for ‘new Fred’

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri on Twitter (h/t The Sun), Manchester United is “leading the race” for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, along with Premier League opponent Chelsea.

Manchester City, an English premier league team, is also interested in the 19-year-old. The midfielder was traded by the Sky Blues to the Saints for $14 million in the summer of 2022. Under his contract, Pep Guardiola’s squad has a buyback clause.

Lavia has performed admirably throughout the current season. The Belgian has played a crucial role for the team at Saint Mary’s Stadium. But, the Hampshire-based team is having a difficult time in the league this year. Southampton is currently fιghting to avoid relegation. Relegation would make it more difficult for the Saints to retain the outstanding midfield prospҽct.

Chelsea is currently searching for a defensive midfielder. The last two transfer windows saw significant investments made in the team by Graham Potter’s group. They acquired Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January.

Jorginho recently joined table-toppers Arsenal after leaving the Blues. Also, the Stamford Bridge team’s roster includes players like Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. In terms of United, Lavia is not our top pick. Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, and Declan Rice are all players who Erik ten Hag is interested in.

The Dutch manager has used players like Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Fred, Scott, and Donny van de Beek this year. In January, Marcel Sabitzer also arrived on loan. The Red Devils don’t appear to have enough depth in the middle of the field. The 19-year-old Southampton star’s future with the Old Trafford team is still up in the air, though, given his previous devotion to our bitter rivals City.
