MLB star Liam Hendriks reveals he pitched most of 2022 season with stage four cαncer… and tells ESPYs audience: ‘I was throwing 100mph and then doing eight rounds of chemo’
Liam Hendriks, a reliever for the Chicago White Sox, reveαled to The ESPYs audience that he pitched through an advanced case of non-Hodgkin lymphoma during the entirety of the 2022 season.
On Wednesday night, during the presentation recognizing the year’s finest sporting moments and sportsmen, he accepted the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
In late April, the 34-year-old Australian was given the all-clear from cαncer, and a month later, he was back on the mound. “Wow, I had no idea. I didn’t experience many signs and symptoms, although I did find a few lumps. This demonstrates how potent the human mind can be. Nothing is impossible if you don’t worry about failure and truly believe in your own abilities, as Hendriks put it.
After completing eight cycles of chemotherapy and four cycles of immunotherapy for Stage 4 lymphoma, the patient reported, “I was able to get out there and throw 96 miles per hour.”That isn’t who I am in terms of appearance. All of this is in your head.
Patrick Mahomes won the award for best male athlete, and Mikaela Shiffrin won the award for best female athlete.
It was a fantastic year overall. It was a roller coaster ride,” Mahomes admitted. I value my coaches, my teammates, and the other players on the squad. Next Tuesday, I’ll be heading back to camp, so this is a fantastic prize. But we’re going to do it again, and we’re going to keep the ball running.
Shiffrin broke Ingemar Stenmark’s record for most World Cup victories with her 87th victory in March. After that, she won the 88th Cup race of the season and the championship for the year. The extraordinary success of this season has led to much discussion of records, which has left me wondering: “Why is a record actually important?” Shiffrin declared at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. I don’t think it’s all that significant to establish new records or shatter old ones. Inspiring and setting an example for the future generation is crucial.
In his first major public appearance since joining ESPN in May, sports talk show host Pat McAfee delivered the opening monologue.
A famous host was not present because of the Hollywood writers’ strike. McAfee dropped clues that comedian Kevin Hart was supposed to take the role but turned it down to show his support for the Writers Guild of America.
According to an ESPN representative, the network’s production staff collaborated with hosts to craft their opening statements.
