For millions of football fans, the chance to play for Liverpool—and particularly Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool—is an unattainable fantasy.

Just 19 years old, Harvey Elliott is already making it happen.

As of this writing, the teenager has made 58 appearances for the club he was born and raised with, Liverpool. His most recent was a great display against Manchester United, when he helped lead Klopp’s team to United’s worst loss in club history.

The youthful baller from Chertsey is unfazed by the expectations placed on him as a result of his youth. “I don’t really give it much thought, to be honest,” Elliott says, his comfortable demeanor further demonstrated by the fact that he sits with his arms crossed over the navy sofa in the living room of the local Airbnb where we are meeting.

“It’s a crazy life at such a young age,” Elliott acknowledges, “because you’re so in the moment, trying to give it your all and work as hard as you can. You don’t really have the time to think of these things.” However, when he pauses to reflect, he realizes how fortunate he is. “I’m savoring each and every moment and taking it all in.”

Several media figures, including as Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, have spoken about the stress of playing as an opponent at Anfield since the victory over United. The takeaway from those conversations is that the Anfield supporters and the Liverpool players will both punish any sign of weakness. This is something that Elliott feels strongly about.

According to him, the atmosphere at Anfield is something that can only be fully appreciated by being there in person. He mentions that Klopp’s tenure alone has been responsible for a number of exciting nights.

The only way to see it is to go there. It’s really unique, to put it mildly. I can tell you from personal experience that the atmosphere is always going to be a whirlwind from the very beginning because Liverpool fans are legendary.

Elliott is undoubtedly talented with the ball in his hands, but he is also part of a new generation of ballers who are expressing a different side through their passion for fashion. There are many who believe that football players should keep their whole attention on the game, even though the football x fashion trend is reaching new heights and attracting a large number of young football followers online.

“You know, people think we’re just like robots. “We simply play football and that’s it,” the midfielder for Liverpool said in response to the criticism he and his teammates have received. “Everyone is human; some may dislike it, some may think it’s wrong, but ultimately, it’s just that, human.”

People would never say a word if it were anybody else, but when it’s a football player, they accuse them of being distracted or lacking concentration. This is our life, and all we want is to live it to the fullest and be happy.

Elliott, who joined New Balance in 2021 at the tender age of 18, cites this belief as a major influence. With an ever-expanding roster of stars like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mané, Lille’s Timothy Weah, and Elliott himself, the Boston-born company has been making waves since its arrival on the football world in recent years. Moreover, unlike competitors that have limited their interactions with players to performance-related activations, this brand has supported players’ off-field self-expression as much as their on-field one.

Elliott thinks it has helped New Balance establish a new approach to marketing today’s football superstars, whereas rival brands have become too comfortable in recent years. He tells me, “I feel like New Balance is different to other brands right now,” as he rocks an all-black tracksuit adorned with the NB emblem.
