If Liverpool are the Premier League side with the most activity on deadline day tomorrow, it will be the least surprising. The Reds have come roaring back after being virtually nonexistent for the better part of the transfer window.
You can bet that Liverpool has been quietly trying to satisfy Arne Slot for quite some time, even though the majority of their dealings with him remain hidden from the public eye.
Liverpool are reportedly working on a strategic agreement to sign a player for £70 million.
Long before Giorigi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, the Reds’ first two summer signings, were even considered, the groundwork was likely laid.
Whatever time remains in the transfer window, the Reds will use it to their advantage and try to add players they think would improve their team. One candidate they may be considering in the next few hours is Rayan Cherki, a playmaker for Olympique Lyon, according to French outlet L’Equipe.
The highly-regarded 21-year-old Frenchman was most recently on international service with the France U-23 national team, who lost the Olympic final to Spain. Given Cherki’s lengthy history, it’s strange to assume that he is only 21 years old.
This summer, Cherki hopes to finally make her leave. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund were rumored to be interested in signing him earlier this summer, but none of those agreements came to fruition. After that, Fulham extended an offer to the Frenchman, but he declined. At this point, Liverpool has conducted discussions and inquiries.
If Cherki’s summer transfer plans fall through, he has the option of signing a long-term deal with Lyon or sitting on the bench. Tomorrow, the 21-year-old will be searching for options in the market, as he presently earns roughly £58,000 a week at the Ligue 1 club.Cherki is a versatile offensive midfielder who can support the attack from either the right or left side of the field. In Arne Slot’s lineup, he can switch positions with the Hungarian and serve as backup for Dominic Szoboszlai at number 10.
With the correct funding, this will be a great acquisition for Liverpool both now and in the future. Hopefully, the Reds are able to finalize the deal tomorrow, but it seems extremely Michael Edwards-esque.
