Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri said on Twitter (via The Sun) that Manchester United and Premier League rivals Chelsea are “leading the race” for Southampton’s young player Romeo Lavia.
In England’s top league, Manchester City is also interested in the 19-year-old. The Sky Blues sold the midfielder to the Saints for £14 million in the summer of 2022. The team that hired Pep Guardiola has a buyback clause in his contract.
Lavia has been in great shape this season. The Belgian has been one of the most important players for Saint Mary’s Stadium. But this season, the Hampshire club is struggling in the league.
Southampton is currently in a fight to stay in the Premier League. If the Saints were to get relegated, it would hurt their chances of keeping the talented midfield prospect.
Chelsea is currently looking for a defensive midfielder. Over the last two transfer windows, Graham Potter’s team has put a lot of money into improving the team. They got Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January.
Jorginho left the Blues recently and joined the top team in the league, Arsenal. The team from Stamford Bridge also has players like Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Regarding United, Lavia is not our top choice. Erik ten Hag is keen on Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
This season, the Dutch manager has called on people like Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Fred and Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek. In January, Marcel Sabitzer also came to the team on loan.
In the middle of the park, the Red Devils don’t seem to have enough depth. But it’s still unclear if the 19-year-old Southampton star will join the Old Trafford team in the next few months, since he used to play for our biggest rivals City.
