According to reports in Portugal, Liverpool have been tracking Matheus Nunes for some time, and Jose Enrique believes it's time for the Reds to make a move.
This summer, the 23-year-old midfielder is attracting the interest of a number of clubs, particularly those in the Premier League.
West Ham is the latest club to enter the race for his signature, and according to Portuguese journalist Bruno Andrade, they are willing to pay six times his current salary.
However, José Enrique believes it is time for Liverpool to put their foot down and pursue the young midfielder.
‘He [Nunes] wants to move to a big club, so maybe [this] is our moment to make a move for him,’ Enrique tweeted.
Liverpool would be foolish not to pursue Matheus Nunes this summer.
They lack depth in the engine room when it comes to players who are able to operate as deep-lying playmakers.
Stylistically, no one else compares to Thiago Alcantara who has recently been side lined for 6 weeks by a hamstring injury.
Thiago is also now the wrong side of 30 and has been an injury prone player throughout his career – he needs an understudy.
But sources close to the club believe such a player won’t be arriving at Anfield this summer.
Jürgen Klopp is said to be pleased with the midfield options he already has at his disposal, and he’ll thus be looking at internal solutions to solve the conundrums presented when Thiago is unavailable.
Harvey Elliott is currently favourite to be handed a starting birth in the engine room for Liverpool in the absence of Thiago.
But of course, Elliott and Thiago possess significantly different profiles, so Jürgen Klopp will have to make a few tactical tweaks to accommodate the incoming Elliott.
If the Reds were to sign Nunes, considering his similarity to Thiago on a technical level, he’d be able to slot in seamlessly in place of the Spaniard when necessary.
But unfortunately for Reds fans, a move for Matheus Nunes does not appear to be on the cards.
Liverpool set to make offer for £40m star – player desperate for the move
Thiago has become increasingly important to Klopp’s team since joining two years ago, and he will be sorely missed if he is unable to play at Anfield. He has a unique profile in the Liverpool squad, and the Reds must adjust their game plan when he is unavailable.
However, Liverpool appear set to change that before the transfer window closes by signing Sporting’s Matheus Nunes.
According to Correio da Manha (via Paisley Gates), the Reds will make an offer to sign Nunes in the coming days.
According to the Portuguese news outlet, a bid of around £40 million would be sufficient to entice Nunes away from Sporting.
According to recent reports, Nunes is eager to join Liverpool this summer and is awaiting a move from the Reds despite strong interest from Wolves.
Wolves are said to have made an acceptable bid for Nunes, but he is still waiting for Liverpool.
According to the Correio da Manha report, Nunes has been learning English and practicing his linguistic skills with his Sporting teammate Marcus Edwards, a Spurs academy product.
Liverpool would have been wise to sign Nunes this summer even before Thiago’s latest injury.
The Spaniard has always been an injury prone player, and now that he’s on the wrong side of 30, his injuries are only going to become more frequent.
As a result, the Reds require an adequate backup for him.
Nunes is the right man for the job.
He’ll only get better as he gets older, and he can do so by learning from Thiago. Until he’s ready to take over for the Spaniard, he can fill in whenever he’s needed.
Reds fans will be hoping that the Correio da Manha report is correct and that an official bid for Nunes will be made soon.
