‘Really uncomfortable’, Alan Shearer after stunned by Liverpool player against Fulham

Alan Shearer has claimed that Virgil van Dijk had a ‘really uncomfortable’ afternoon against Aleksandar Mitrović

Alan Shearer has claimed that Virgil van Dijk had a ‘really uncomfortable’ afternoon against Aleksandar Mitrović during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Fulham on Saturday at Craven Cottage.

The Premier League legend added that it wasn’t just Van Dijk who struggled against Mitrovic because Liverpool’s whole backline couldn’t cope with the hard-hitting striker.

Before a ball was kicked, not many were giving the newly-promoted side a chance, but when Mitrovic rose above Trent Alexander-Arnold to open the scoring, it left many in shock.

Even when Liverpool equalized in the second half through Darwin Nunez, some thought it was the start of a comeback, but the fit and firing Mitrovic had other ideas.

As Shearer praised the player and Fulham’s overall performance yesterday, the Serbia international ran at Van Dijk, won a foul, and then converted the penalty.

“Fulham were absolutely brilliant,” Shearer said. “The energy they displayed. The manner in which they pursued Liverpool. In terms of getting balls into the box, they played to Mitrovic’s strengths.

“He made the back four extremely uncomfortable, which is not often said about Liverpool, particularly Virgil van Dijk.”

Few players have caused Van Dijk problems, but Mitrovic did so on the first weekend of the Premier League season, forcing the Dutchman to concede a penalty.

There were many doubts about Marco Silva’s team and their free-scoring striker from the Championship, but this will boost their confidence enormously.

If they can cause this much havoc against a team of Liverpool’s caliber, the only team they should be concerned about is Manchester City.

Many predicted Fulham’s demise before a ball was kicked, but if Mitrovic believes he is up against a Van Dijk-type defender every week, he should bring his ‘A’ game most of the time, which bodes well for the London club.

Either way, the first week of the Premier League season has already thrown up a few surprises, and with the engine not really firing yet, there are surely more to come.

Liverpool have agreed £39million terms, £60,000 a week raise for Anfield star

Liverpool have offloaded Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi this summer but fortunately, they have agreed new deals with Salah and Jota.

The Portuguese international was earning just over £90,000 a week and has recently secured a lucrative new contract with the Anfield club.

According to media reports, the Seleccao forward has received a significant salary increase worth around £60,000 per week.

Liverpool have agreed terms that will pay Jota £150,000 per week for the next five years, according to an exclusive story covered by Football Insider.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers two years ago, the 25-year-old has been a big hit.

Darwin Nunez, a big money signing, has been given a contract worth £140,000 per week (The Guardian).

As a result, it is not surprising that Jota will now earn more than the Uruguayan international after proving himself at the club.

The former Pacos de Ferreira forward has missed the start of the new season due to injury, and reports suggest he may be out until next month (Football Insider).

Jota started 27 Premier League games last season, scoring 15 goals and providing 6 assists. Let’s hope he gets back to full strength soon.
