Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been discussing the quality of Liverpool as the two teams prepare to battle it out for glory again.
Rodri, a Manchester City midfielder, expects another tense title battle with Liverpool this season and believes four other teams are capable of competing for Premier League glory.
Following the final matchday of the 2021/22 season, City and Liverpool were separated by a single point, a scenario that also occurred in 2018/19, with Pep Guardiola’s side narrowly winning. Many are predicting another competitive season between the two teams, who have long been a cut above the rest of the division.
Jurgen Klopp’s men defeated the Sky Blues on Saturday afternoon to claim the Community Shield, sending an early warning to their main rivals ahead of the return to the Premier League. The reigning Premier League champions will now be eager to respond to this defeat and retain their title for another year.
Rodri is confident that the Reds will cause problems for the Citizens once more, but believes that Liverpool will not be the only team vying for first place. When asked what the difference between the teams might be this time, the Spaniard told the matchday programme: “The quality and standard of both teams is unbelievable.” When you’re competing for titles against them, you can’t afford to make a single mistake. I’m sure it’ll be the same next season.
“Not just Liverpool, but Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, [Manchester] United,” added the 26-year-old on the upcoming title race. We just have to focus on ourselves as always, focus on each game and we will see if we can make it three Premier League titles in a row. They’re a top team and have great players in every position, like us.
“They’re [Liverpool] so demanding. They’re a top team and have great players in every position, like us. It’s so intense, whether it’s at the Etihad, Anfield, Wembley or any other stadium. The level is so high.”
Both of last season’s top two have improved their attacking options, with Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland set to light up the Premier League in the coming months. The former won the pair’s head-to-head battle at the King Power Stadium, and the Uruguayan is definitely starting to feel at home within the team.
Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho have also joined the Anfield ranks, but Rodri is refusing to read too much into the Reds’ additions. “They try to strengthen their side every season, like all top teams,” said the former Atletico Madrid player.
“Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and many other teams have signed top players this summer. As we always say, we will always just focus on ourselves and try to be the best we can be. I don’t worry about that too much. I always trust our club to make the best signings to improve the team and I think they’ve done that again this season.
“We will always be ready. Every game, every moment is so important and can be the difference. We will always try to show our best performances in every single competition that we’re in and we will fight until the end.”
