Scotland defeated Poland and avoided instant relegation in the Nations League thanks to a goal from Andy Robertson deep into injury time.
To negate Kamil Piątkowski’s equalizer, the captain scored a remarkable header past Lukasz Skorupski, his first in six years. The first goal had come from John McGinn in the third minute.
Scotland had a slim chance of finishing in the top two and making it to the knockout stages going into the match, but they had to rely on Portugal to do them a favor against Croatia, which did not happen as the two teams tied 1-1.
As a result, the Poles were demoted to League B, the second division, and the Scots were sent into a relegation playoff. Scotland finished three points ahead of last-place Poland in third place with seven points.
Croatia, who are in second place with eight points, secured a last-eight berth with a 1-1 home draw against the Portuguese in their final match on Monday. Portugal, who secured first position and a trip to the quarterfinals last week, has 14 points.
