I became more ambitious when Ronaldo left Real Madrid, says Benzema.
The striker claims that the departure of the Portuguese great motivated him to improve.
Although Karim Benzema acknowledges that Cristiano Ronaldo mentored him while the two were teammates in Spain, he claims that he has grown more ambitious after the Portuguese star departed Real Madrid.
After nine years with the Spanish giants and achieving unheard-of heights with Real Madrid, Ronaldo departed the team in 2018 to join Juventus.
And in the years after, Benzema has more than competently replaced the position of the team’s leading goal scorer, although admitting he needed to adjust after Ronaldo left.
What was said by Benzema?
“It’s true that I’ve scored more goals since he departed, but when he was here, I was providing assists, and he really supported me both on and off the field, “At a news conference held before the UEFA Super Cup, he remarked.
“But I was confident that I was capable of more. It was time to adapt my play and goals when he went, and things are going well so far.
The ascent of Benzema at Real Madrid
Despite joining from Lyon in 2009, he generally remained in Ronaldo’s shadow, reaching the 20-goal mark in the league just twice before Ronaldo left in 2018.
Since then, he has scored at least 21 goals in each of the last four seasons and has tallied 131 goals in all competitions, including last season’s Champions League victory for Real Madrid.
Although Benzema himself was reticent to join in on the issue, he has since been regarded as one of the finest players in the world, if not the best.
I’m not going to claim to be the best, he remarked. But I always strive to give my best effort for the finest club in the world. Although I have to perform at a high level every year, last year’s level was undoubtedly excellent. In the games, I simply attempt to support my team.
“I’m not focusing on Marcelo’s record; instead, I’m going to make an effort to win as many titles as I can. I’ve often argued that team titles are more significant than individual ones.
