Some Swifties are going to court over their dissatisfaction with Ticketmaster. Following the ticketing debacle for Swift’s The Eras Tour, a group of Taylor Swift fans is suing Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, based in Los Angeles. Because of the shambles, some potential ticket buyers were forced to wait in long virtual lines, while others were left without tickets.

26 fans from 13 states filed a complaint with the Los Angeles County District Court on Dec. 2 alleging that Ticketmaster violated California’s Cartwright Act and Unfair Competition Law during their Verified Fan Program on Nov. 15. The general ticket sale for Swift’s tour was canceled last month by the ticket vendor site due to “insufficient remaining tickets.”

“According to information and belief, Ticketmaster has carried out this anticompetitive scheme by forcing fans of musicians to exclusively use Ticketmaster for presale and sales prices that are higher than what a competitive market price would be,” the complaint states, adding that Ticketmaster’s “anticompetitive behavior” has and will continue to “harm Taylor Swift fans.”

The plaintiffs accuse Ticketmaster of “fraud, misrepresentation, and fraudulent inducement” in the documents. Specifically, the plaintiffs claim the ticket vendor site “intentionally and purposefully misled ticket purchasers” by allowing “scalpers and bots” to access the code-based presale.

Prior to the cancellation of the public ticket sale, LiveNation’s chairman Greg Maffei told CNBC that 14 million people attempted to obtain presale tickets on Nov. 15. However, only 1.5 million presale spots were available. The lawsuit requests that the court fine the ticket vendor site $2,500 for each ᴠiolation.

Following the cancellation of the general sale, Ticketmaster issued an apology to Swift and her fans in a statement on November 17. The vendor claimed that a massive surge of bot attacks created a massive demand, which their Verified Fan Program was designed to counter.

The Midnights singer addressed the incident in an Instagram Story on November 18. She didn’t name Ticketmaster in her note, but she claimed her team had asked the party in question “multiple times if they could handle this kind of demand,” and the ticket site assured her they could.

“It’s extremely difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and it’s excruciating for me to just sit back and watch mistakes happen with no recourse,” she wrote.

As of December 7, neither Ticketmaster nor Taylor Swift had responded publicly to the Swifties’ lawsuit.

The Swifties’ lawsuit is not Ticketmaster’s only legal concern in connection with the concert ticket debacle. The Justice Department has also opened an investigation into Live Nation Entertainment for potential abuse of power, according to The New York Times.

The singer did not specifically mention Ticketmaster in her note, but she did allude to the ticketing debacle. “It’s extremely difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and it’s excruciating for me to just sit back and watch mistakes happen with no recourse,” she wrote.

Swift also claimed that a “outside entity” assured her and her team that they would be able to handle a high demand for tickets. On presale day, however, this was not the case. On the same day that Ticketmaster canceled the general ticket sale, Live Nation’s chairman Greg Maffei told CNBC that 14 million people attempted to purchase presale tickets on Nov. 15. However, only 1.5 million “verified” slots were available for presale, causing the site to become overcrowded.

Maffei also stated that Ticketmaster, a subsidiary of Live Nation, sold over 2 million tickets on November 15. Swift said it was “truly amazing” that 2.4 million people bought tickets on her Instagram Story, but she was disappointed that it came at a cost to her fans.

Swift concluded her statement by saying she hopes to find new opportunities to gather with fans. “I appreciate your desire to attend. “You have no idea how much that means to me,” she explained.
