The signing of Sergio Gomez provides much-needed relief for Man City and Pep Guardiola

Sergio Gomez has completed his transfer to Manchester City and will bring some added relief to Pep Guardiola and his squad.

Sergio Gomez has joined Manchester City for £11 million from Anderlecht.

The left-back has taken the number 21 shirt, previously worn by David Silva and, more recently, Ferran Torres, and will join Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad immediately. There were rumors that the 21-year-old would be sent out on loan again, but the manager confirmed last Friday that he would be needed at the Etihad this season.

Following the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal in late July, there was an obvious need for a left-back, and Marc Cucurella was the club’s top target. City were put off by Brighton & Hove Albion’s exorbitant valuation, and the Spaniard ended up joining Chelsea for a record-breaking £62 million.

The Premier League champions quickly moved on to other targets, and Gomez emerged as a possibility after an excellent season in Belgium under former City captain Vincent Kompany. In all competitions, he scored seven goals and provided 15 assists, demonstrating an attacking pedigree that will excite Guardiola.

For many years, Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker have demonstrated what it takes to be a starting full-back in Catalonia. Despite being a natural right-sided defender, the former has evolved into one of Europe’s best left-backs, while the latter is a firmly established Premier League great.

Displacing any of them on the team would be a huge ask for Gomez, but he could improve their performance while getting plenty of chances to impress himself. The Spanish U21 international is unlikely to start, but in such a busy season, he will get plenty of playing time.

And not just in domestic cup competitions, as Gomez will preserve Cancelo’s fitness in some low-risk home games while integrating himself into such a world-class squad. He is still a raw talent, and patience will be required, especially given the step-up in quality from the Belgian Pro League.

Guardiola appears to believe the left-back can compete for a starting spot with Cancelo, and that confidence will undoubtedly motivate Gomez. Breaking into the City team may be the most difficult task in Europe right now, but a typically small squad makes the job that much easier.

As the season progresses from midweek to weekend games, we may see Gomez in action much sooner than we think.
