Tom Cruise, Former Superintendent of Remarkable NYC Townhouse Now on the Market for $15 Million

One mission that wasn’t impossible for Tom Cruise? Working as a super in New York City.

Evidently, prior to landing his big break, the War of the Worlds actor, 61, was — in fact — the super in a New York City building in the 1980s. And now, that building is for sale.

The five-story, 9,165-square-foot building, which is officially on the market for $14.995 million, is located at 50 West 86th street. Known as the Good Luck Mansion, it has a privately gated entrance and features eight apartments — three one-bedrooms, one two-bedroom, one two-bedroom duplex, one studio, a two-bedroom penthouse, and a one-bedroom penthouse.

Gonsalves tells PEOPLE that Sarah Jessica Parker and her then-boyfriend, Robert Downey Jr., also lived in the building during the 1980s — along with a few other famous faces.

“Tom Cruise; Sarah Jessica Parker; Robert Downey, Jr.; John Lennon; King Curtis and many others all have one thing in common: they all lived at the Good Luck Mansion,” Gonsalves says. “50 West 86 Street is now on the market and ready for its next owner to honor its historical provenance and rich tradition of handing its lucky breaks.”

Each apartment boasts high ceilings, exposed brick, fireplaces, and some sort of outdoor space, in the form of balconies or terraces. And all of the moldings in the building are completely original, from when it was built in 1907.

There is also a commercial space available in the building, along with a swimming pool on the first floor.

A representative for the realtor confirmed that Cruise was, in fact, the super at the Good Luck Mansion during the 80s, and that he lived in a studio there at the time. A former tenant who lived in the building at the time, eXp Realty, LLC real estate agent Mitchell J Hall, revealed on New York real estate blog Active Rain, claiming that Cruise had been in acting school at the time. 

Cruise was reportedly only paying about $300 per month, thanks to a deal he fostered with the landlord, allowing him to take out the trash and vacuum the halls in exchange for a discount. Since the 80s, the actor has upgraded significantly from that tiny studio apartment. 

In 2021, PEOPLE reported that Cruise was selling his 320-acre Telluride, Colo. mansion for $39.5 million. The 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom, 10,000-square-foot home featured a game room, a fitness center, two fireplaces, an outdoor terrace and a three-car garage. Also on the property was a guest house with three bedrooms.
