Braves Briefing – Spencer Strider continues to set records

Spencer Strider is fantastic.

Spencer Strider had the fastest 200-strikeout season of any pitcher.

Strider recorded his 200th strikeout of the season in Tuesday night’s 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels, forcing Shoehi Ohtani into a bad swing on a 0-2 count. He reached the 200 strikeout mark in 123.1 innings, shattering his previous record of 130.0 innings set a year ago.

This season, Atlanta has won 18 of the 22 games in which Strider has started.

Will Moon discussed the coverage of the Tuesday night victory. He emphasized the relief that arrived behind Spencer Strider.

The Braves had a relatively calm pre-deadline season, with speculated acquisitions of a starting pitcher or outfielder falling through. The Braves did, however, make additions to their bullpen. Brad Hand was acquired from Colorado today, and Pierce Johnson had previously been added. Neither man pitched tonight (Hand hasn’t yet joined the roster), but with the recent return of A.J. Minter from the IL, as well as Joe Jiménez’s scorching form, you’re seeing what was once a patchwork unit morph into a potentially huge strength. (And this bullpen was already third in MLB in FIP, fWAR, and ERA, as well as fifth in xFIP.)

What’s next for the Atlanta Braves

The last game of this three-game series begins at 12:20 PM Eastern time today. Yonny Chirinos (4-4, 4.34 ERA, 5.34 FIP) pitches for Atlanta as he auditions for a spot on the pitching rotation after Max Fried returns (which is expected soon).

Lucas Giolito (6-7, 3.85 ERA, 4.55 FIP), Fried’s former high school teammate, will face him in his second start as an Angel after being acquired from the White Sox last week. (In his debut start, he was defeated by Toronto.)

The game, hosted by Voice of the Braves Brandon Gaudin, is viewable on Bally Sports South inside Braves Country and on MLB.TV outside of the broadcast area. The radio show, hosted by Ben Ingram, may be heard locally on 680 AM/93.7 FM. Outside of the Atlanta market, listen to the Atlanta Braves Radio Network or MLB.com.
