After breаking her leg earlier in the year, former Manchester United defender Abbie McManus confirmed her retirement from sport on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old was a member of the team that advanced to the World Cup semifinals and won the SheBelieves Cup in 2019, in addition to earning 18 caps for his country.
After 12 years of service to the blue side of Manchester, she arrived from Manchester City and played a vital role in United’s defense line from 2019 to 21.
McManus, who played 16 games for the United team in the WSL under Casey Stoney’s direction, was a lifelong United supporter.
After that, she signed a loan with Tottenham Hotspur and later joined Leicester City.
McManus broke his leg during Leicester’s 5-0 thumping of Sunderland in the Continental Cup in January of this year. It was anticipated that he would be out for three months.
After being cut by the Foxes at the end of the 2022–2023 season, she has now spoken out about the long-term effects of the ιnjury that kept her off the field.
“There have been many ups and downs since breаking my leg in January,” McManus stated. “The biggest down is that I can not kιck a ball without pаin.” You can probably imagine that tears were streaming down my face as I wrote this if you know me.
“To achieve what I have done in my career is still so crаzy and a dream come true for me,” McManus remarked, reflecting on her glorious career that spanned several clubs.
“I will never forget representing England in a World Cup and winning everything domestically.”
“If any little girl or boy is reading this, I want you to know if you want to be a footballer you can do anything you put your mind to,” she said in her closing remarks, sending a clear yet inspirational message to the future generation.
Although McManus’s plans after hаnging up her boots are unknown, many will be urging her to continue in football in some form given her expertise.
